What’s Your Depression Story? | Your Story, Photo, Poem, Video Published

I’ve shared my depression stories with you here and there over the last year, and many of you have bravely come forward in response and commented or emailed me parts of your story as well. When we share our experiences with each other, it’s very therapeutic because it doesn’t fall on deaf ears. Depression makes us feel alone in a crowded room, so knowing that there are others who have seen the same lows that we have is extremely powerful. Seeing someone describe the same feelings you’ve experienced allows you to breathe for a minute and think, “OK – so I’m not that crazy.

So I’m opening up a forum for us to talk about depression.  There are over 350,000,000 people affected by depression globally, and half of Americans with depression are seeking absolutely no treatment.  People with depression are shunned, overlooked, and condemned to being called “lazy,” so talking about actual experiences seems uncommon.

It’s time we change that.

I don’t want this to be a ‘competition,’ in fact, I’m going to post every single story I receive. No one’s story is better than another, and not everyone communicates in the same way. I also realize that not everyone writes the same way, or even writes at all. So I’ll be accepting any type of submission you can think of that tells your story, or even a part of it. Perhaps a picture that encompasses your depression/anxiety or a certain period in your life, a written story, a homemade video, someone else’s YouTube video, a poem, a brief paragraph, a sentence, a quote, a selfie, a picture of a craft project – whatever describes how depression touches you. It may also be someone else’s depression that touches you; those around us often suffer with us.

Please email all submissions to thoughtswithdildo@gmail.com. You can submit as many different things as you need for your story, just try to contain them all in the same email so I can publish everything you submit together. Also please indicate if you’d like your name or handle published with your materials, otherwise submissions will remain anonymous. All submissions will be posted on this page of my blog.

Remember that there is no judgment here, we’re all in this together.
